    Rules

    1. Boxes are placed 21 ft apart measured from the front of each box.
      Boxes are 12" x 12" x 6".
      Pie is 5" high.
      Washers: 2 1/2" with 1" hole 1/8" thick.
    2. 2 players per team
    3. First shot is determined by paper/rock/scissors by 1 player per team. Sudden death format.
    4. One player per team at each end. Once playing sides are chosen there can be no changing sides until next game.
    5. There will be 2 washers per team thrown at each end. Each team member will throw both washers consecutively.
    6. Underhand throws only
    7. All throws must be taken from behind the front of each box, which means you can stand beside the box but your toes cannot cross the front of it. If line is crossed then the throw is forfeited
    8. Each game will be a maximum of 25 minutes.
    9. Must be 19 years of age or older.

    Point count

    1. Washer within 1 foot of the box is worth 1 point
    2. Washer in box is worth 2 points.

Note:If washer lands on side of box and has not fallen into the box it is not classified as in the box. It is worth 1 point as per 1 foot of the box. The same holds for a washer on the edge of the pipe/sewer.
Washer in the pipe/sewer is worth 3 points.

    Scoring

    1. A higher pt toss cancels out a lower pt toss (1 pipe/sewer toss will cancel out 1 toss in the box; Ex. Team A throws one in the sewer and Team B throws one in the box. Team A scores 3 pts and Team B none.
    2. If higher tosses are equaled then scoring goes to lower tosses. Ex. Each team has 1 washer in the sewer. They cancel each other out. Team A has 1 in the box = 2 pts. Team B has 1 outside the box = 1 point. Team A wins with 2 points.
    3. Equal tosses cancel each other out and no pts are awarded.
    4. Washers that bounce into scoring positions count.
    5. Washers must land IN appropriate scoring positions. If a washer lands on the rim of the box or sewer/pipe it is scored with the lower total (Ex. Rings land on edge of box = 1 pt, edge of sewer = 2 pts)
    6. The winners are: a: The 1st team to reach 21 - 2 pt victory is needed. Play continues until a 2 point victory is achieved. b:The team that is leading when time expires (25 mins).

    Techniques and game fundamentals

There are a few different styles used in delivering the washers. Many hours of patience and correct practice are necessary to develop a good washer throw. Some of these styles are smooth and correct with precision like accuracy. Many others are not.Described below are a few throwing techniques.

    The Finger Roll:

The most popular of throws, the Finger Roll should roll or spin off the index finger and maintain a trajectory that is somewhat parallel to the ground. Because of the parallel trajectory, the Finger Roll has many advantages. The washer will consistently land flat and have a better chance of a consistent bounce. Crawlers are a common score using this technique. For advice from a person who has perfected "The Finger Roll" it is recommended you get some professional instruction from "Tent Packin " Berna.

    Horseshoe:

End-over-end technique. The advantages of the Horseshoe throw is the ability to land Hoppers and Creepers. The disadvantage of the Horseshoe throw is its end-over-end trajectory and the inconsistency of its landing. For advice from a person who has perfected "The Horseshoe" throw it is recommended you get some professional instruction from "Hammerhead " Mark.

    Reverse Horseshoe:

Similar to the style of Horseshoe players except the palm of your hand faces downward. The advantages are the ability to land Hoppers and Creepers. The disadvantage of the Horseshoe throw is its end-over-end trajectory and the inconsistency of its landing. For advice from a person who has perfected "The Reverse Horseshoe" throw it is recommended you get some professional instruction from "Smokin" Joe.

    The Overhand:

Opposite to the underhand the overhand is a particular interesting throw. Most of the people that throw the Overhand are metrosexuals and they most commonly prevail in the Digdeguash area of Charlotte County. For professional instruction on this particular throw contact Chef Snooty Bill and he can be found at the Snooty Fox Restaurant and order the wings to get his special touch.

    Helpful Hints:

    • Choose a technique that works for you
    • As you are working on developing a rhythmic delivery you will develop muscle memory. Precision, rhythm, timing and concentration are the key to victory
    • Follow through and stay loose. "Think Loosey Goosy". A smooth, accurate delivery is impossible without a proper follow-through. This applies to a bowler, a golfer and a baseball pitcher, as well as a professional washer player.

I first received golf lessons from Dane Mackenzie several years ago at Cardinal Golf near Newmarket in Ontario. I had been playing the game, or perhaps hacking my way around the place would be a better description, for about 15 years prior to this. I decided that if I ever really wanted to put myself in the position of playing to a higher level, then proper tuition was urgently needed. Like a lot of golfers, I had gone out and purchased numerous DVDs, books and coaching aids, listened to the "your head was up" brigade of amateur instructors, but nothing seemed to improve my game, and in some ways they became more of a hindrance than a benefit. This is where Dane stepped in....

There are a great number of golf instructors out there with excellent technical skills, but unfortunately not all possess the ability to either get their point across or put their students at ease while learning a sport that can leave you more than a little frustrated with the game, not to mentionyour self-confidence. I had approached a number of instructors over the years but ultimately I could never seem to progress or apply what they had been trying to get me to do. I would never blame them for this, as it was just a case of not finding the right match for my needs.

Prior to commencing lessons, Dane talked with me about how I viewed my game and what my expectations were going forward. He immediately made me feel at ease and gave me a sense of hope that I should, with his guidance and hard practice, be able to get to a point where I would be playing a technically better game of golf and also learning to enjoy my time while on the course.

Well folks, several years later I find myself not only enjoying every minute that I'm out there playing, but my game has improved in leaps and bounds. Just getting into the habit of applying the correct fundamentals was not a simple task for me, but with Dane's persistence and devotion to his profession I ultimately achieved what I set out to do.
I still hit the occasional snowman, but as Dane taught me, learn from your mistakes, think back on the fundamentals and make the next shot count. Before working with him

I would regularly shoot in the 100's, but within a few years I was hitting in the low 80's on a regular basis. I'll never be a scratch golfer but my only regret is not teaming up with Dane earlier. He worked wonders with my game and I would like to think he could do the same for you.

I whole heartedly recommend Dane for any of you who really want to see their game improve and discover what a fun and enjoyable sport this game of golf can be.

I had been an avid golfer since the age of 14. It wasn't until one of my good friends Dane Mackenzie started teaching me in my early 20's that I started to see improvement in my game. Whether it was at the range or on the course he was willing to help me. After a month I started to see a drastic improvement in both my driving and short game. If it wasn't for his help I'd surly be still looking for my ball in the woods. But with his time and effort I went from a beginner to an above average player. I'm thankful that I was able to have him not only as my coach but as my friend. I have taken lessons from other instructors but I usually left my lessons with too many swing thoughts running through my mind and I was unable to improve. He simplifies the golf swing and makes the game easy and fun.

I wanted to write to you and thank you for your golf lessons. Never in my life have I met a person who made my learning experience so enjoyable. Your tips, tricks, and pointers have helped my game so much. I'm shooting more birdies and pars then I ever have. Because of your lessons I have been able to even teach some of my friend's and get them involved in golf. I really think if it wasn't for your lessons I wouldn't be playing golf today. After so many frustrating years you have made golf exciting and fun!!

Thanks you so much for everything. I would gladly recommend your service to anyone, just send them my way.

    Hello,

Thank you for the great service you provided.

I believe the kids had a great time at your facility. I also noticed a lot of different things happening up on the golf range which I thought were pretty significant in developing their golf skills. Dane has a lot of great ideas and kept the kids focused and challenged (they love a challenge!).  Thank you for the great experience.

P.S: I LOVE the volley ball courts.

Why should I take a golf lesson?

Excellent question! Your golf coach is knowledgeable in all aspects of the game of golf, and can help speed up the learning process and make the game more enjoyable. Without a doubt, golf is very challenging game! But remember, golf is a GAME, and games are supposed to be FUN. Golf can be a very rewarding game, but also a very frustrating one! There is also an awful lot to learn about the many different aspects of the game and proper golf instruction can simplify all the thoughts running through your mind. The golf swing can seem very complicated but a great golf instructor can work with your physical capabilities and get you hitting the ball with more consistency after one lesson . The game of golf also involves many shots that do not involve full power – called 'finesse shots'. Putting is a different game in itself – some call it an 'art'. Then there is the 'mental' aspect of the game – perhaps the most challenging aspect of all! Even the best players in the world will NEVER fully master the game after many years of trying.

What should I expect during my golf lesson?

You should expect to learn something new, something that may not have experienced or felt before, perhaps feels awkward at first, and may take time to feel comfortable. Such changes will ONLY feel comfortable through repetition. Remember, you’ve made the decision to take a lesson for one of many reasons: you are a beginner, just starting out. Maybe you have played a little, but have made the commitment to yourself that you want to improve. Maybe you play often, but may have ‘lost the feel’ and need assistance to get your swing back. In other words, what you are doing right now is not working and you may not know what needs to be changed. Your golf coach can quickly determine the changes, and offer a plan to make these changes into long-lasting improvements.

How do I get the most out of my golf lesson?

Arrive early. Stretch, loosen up, and hit some warm-up shots.

Your instruction time is usually limited. If you use your lesson time as your warm up & to regain your timing, you are wasting valuable time. Some days, it only takes a few warm up shots to 'get into the groove'. Other days, it can take quite a few, if at all.

    Practice in-between lessons!

As simple as this sounds, and for many different reasons, many golfers DON'T practice in between lessons! Practice on the driving range, or on the golf course. Practice the swing drills at home that your coach showed you.

As your instructor /coach, within the first few swings, I can usually see the biggest part of your swing that will need attention. Most often, we can't 'fix' everything in one session but you will definitely leave your first lesson with much improvement and feeling better about your golf game. Unfortunately there is a old saying ''You must get worse before you get better''. I have never had a student leave a lesson hitting the ball worse than when they arrived. A lot of golf instructors focus on making too many changes and this can confuse the student. You do not have to have a golf swing that is perfect to hit the ball far and consistently. Within your first few swings, I can determine what we have to work on today, next time, and probably the time after that. I also know which practice drills should be your homework.

Realize that changes lead to long-lasting improvement.

How can I tell if I’m improving?

Another excellent question! If your 'best' shot that you hit today is better than the 'best' shot that you hit before, then you ARE making a step forward. Once again, remember that some changes may take time to feel comfortable, through repetition and practice. Initially, you may start out your practice sessions averaging only 1 or 2 good shots out of 10, 3 or 4 mediocre ones and 3 to 4 lousy shots! Through hard work and practice, you MAY improve to 3 to 4 good shots out of 10. With more time and practice, you may further improve to 4 or 5 good shots. The best way to determine if you are making an improvement is to assess your 'best' shot of that particular practice session.

How often should I take a lesson?

A lesson once a week usually offers the most productive results – assuming that the golfer has an opportunity to practice in between lessons. Most golf instruction is cumulative – meaning that any changes / improvements that we need to make NEXT time are dependent of understanding / feeling comfortable / getting used to the changes we make TODAY. Long lasting improvement comes from making many small, manageable changes. We usually can't 'fix' everything in one session. How quickly that these changes feel comfortable depends on the individual golfer, and how much effort is put in.

Should I take one lesson, or a series of lessons?

Once again, that depends on the individual. For beginners, we recommend a series of lessons. Your coach can then ‘map’ out a plan of instruction, and offer that instruction in manageable bites. For experienced golfers with established golf games, one or two single lessons may be sufficient or you may want to enroll in a full season coaching program.

    Is a videotape lesson valuable?

Absolutely! A picture is worth 1,000 words. Video analysis of the golf swing is a very powerful tool and can present a very clear, concise picture to the golfer. Quite often, what you FEEL you are doing in your golf swing compared to what you are ACTUALLY doing in your golf swing are widely different. Research has also shown that visual learning (by the use of videotape analysis) can be more effective than verbal learning (your golf coach simply talk, talk, talking). Once the golfer has a visual picture of his golf swing in his mind, then the verbal instruction and accompanying swing drills can offer much better results.

How can I become more consistent?

The definition of 'consistent' is 'repeating the same thing every time'. Golfers often say: "I can hit some really good shots, but also can hit some really bad shots." The quest for consistency usually leads to the questions: how often do you practice, how effective is your technique, do you have a consistent routine that you use to get prepared to make a golf shot, or does your routine vary, depending on your mood, emotion, or circumstances?

What actually happens during the golf swing?

No doubt about it, the golf swing is a very complicated series of athletic movements. The golf swing is all about ‘timing’. Timing of the many intricate parts coming together at that brief moment when the golf clubhead makes contact with the golf ball. As the golfer watches the ball, hands are gripping, arms are moving, shoulders are turning, legs are supporting, knees are flexing, wrists are hinging, unhinging and hinging again, weight is shifting, and the body is rotating. The actual physics of a golf clubhead striking a golf ball at a high rate of speed is very exacting. The clubhead can be traveling at speeds of over 100 mph when it makes contact with the golf ball - the moment of impact. The clubhead travels in a circle around the body, and is rotating counter-clockwise very quickly as it approaches the ball. The clubhead also travels in an arc: on the ground at the start, upwards to a high point at the top of the backswing, back down to a low point at impact, and then up high again at the finish. Correct timing results in the golf ball flying straight and true!
